Ok heres the scenario.................
I pull up to an intersection, lights red & i sit & wait.
After about 15 or so seconds no other cars have passed & the light remains red, Im waiting to turn left. Then I think to myself "Screw this" as I look around no red light cameras, No traffic at ALL can be seen in any direction up to 60 or so metres , So I take off..
Next thing I know my Mate sitting next to me is giving me one hell of a mouthful telling me basically Im a dick & dishonest!!!!
Im sitting there thinking "You gotta be sh*tting me!!"
Would you have gone???

It's no big deal and many lights should have a 'left turn permitted after stopping' sign anyway.

The lights at my work sometimes take ages to change. When the road is clear and I need to turn left I just do it. As far as I'm concerned if the lights don't detect you waiting then they are faulty and are treated as such.
Did it once at a red left turn arrow just like svo347. Was waiting for at least a minute so I said f*ck it. My mate concurred with me.

As for the "many lights should have a 'left turn permitted after stopping' sign", damn straight I say. The US has a road rule where EVERY intersection you can turn right on the red after stopping if it's safe, unless otherwise signposted.

He sounds like a law obiding sheep to me. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

In the ACT it's actually legal do to that if there is a sign stating turn left on red permitted after stopping. I think all red light intersections without a slip lane should allow it.
I agree that a law should be there to allow you to do it. I'd think about doing it to.....but I wouldn't.
Why? Well....what if there was a camera? Once you start getting into the habit, you might just slip up. Besides...whats a minute of my time? (especially at 2am)
