cool Xr6

How many versions of the current XR6 are there?

We did an exhaust on one the other day, only travelled 1500km, and instead of having IRS and the dual system with the blocked off 2nd tailpipe, it was a live axle with standard Falcon 2-1/4" exhaust on it.

Even with the earlier XR6, they had a single 2-1/2" system.

Must have been an XR6 poverty pack?

So is XR6HP the poverty pack? ie No IRS, & no dual exhaust system.

The XR6 HPs might be mising VCT/IRS and a few others bits and pieces (worse now than s1/s2), but they are faster stock, and have more room for power gains. :s3

They are faster with a stock standard Falcon exhaust - ie Baffled 2-1/4" ??? or Is the power gain from fixing the exhaust??? Are they faster around corners without the IRS???

XR's are supposed to be performance versions of the Falcon. Stock exhaust and no IRS doesn't seem like much of a performance version.

Maybe all Falcons should evolve into the XR look, and the XR's should evolve into a new, more aggressive look. The XR front looks good.

Yeah with the advent of XR6HP and XR6VCT ford decided not to bother with a sports exhaust on the HP, altho it is still rated at 164kW so perhaps there was a change in the engine design to compensate (lets hope).

Yep, the XR6 HP is the "poverty pack" version of the XR series. It has live axle, and the interior is lower spec (single CD, power windows front only). The higher rating than standard six is due to intake and exhaust "mods" *ahem*.

The XR6VCT has the VCT engine (duh!), IRS and slight differences in the interior spec (6 stack CD, power windows all round).

The XR6HP is faster because the addition of VCT engine and IRS to the VCT makes it a BIG FAT BASTARD. The engine is rated higher output, but can't overpower the weight I'm afraid. I'll be stuffed if you can feel the difference in speed driving them though.

Bottom line, don't but the VCT for the engine. Buy it instead for the higher trim level and IRS. And yes, you can notice the difference IRS makes - especially on the punt.

Yeap as well as the XR6 VCT handling alot better with IRS, the engine apparently is perceptably smoother up in the high revs and generally revs cleanly due to the Variable Timing.

XR6 VCT is rated at 172kw and 164kw for the HP. I've seen excellent gains mod wise on a HP but yet to see a VCT with mods. Come to think of it i haven't seen a VCT on a dyno yet.

If i were to buy an AU XR6 i'd definitly be after a HP (part reason after seeing Venom XR's car) as in the long run i'm abit naff at the variable cam mechanism as the km's clock up. But having said that the VCT does give a challenge to the sueprcharged commo engines.

Both Targa rally XR6s have been HPs. Darryl Coons GT-P XR6 was a HP.

Live axle vs IRS is probably the biggest difference. Who cares about manual window winders in the rear doors, I'm never going to sit there!

You can easily upgrade the HP stereo to premium sound, as mine has.

Mid-S2/S3 HPs had the diff downgraded from LSD standard to it being optional.

VCT might get a new exhaust at Tickford vs HP's stock exhaust, but if you're after good gains you'd be replacing either system anywayz.

If you option up the HP the right way, you're only missing IRS and two power window switches.

Live axle is fun to. :s3

Spot on, I have a Series 2 XR6HP and the level of interior is no different than the VCT (Ford made single CDplayer standard on both the HP and VCT for the series 2). I took the option of LSD amongst other refinements and I wouldn't own anything else (other than maybe an XR8!) To call it the poverty pack is far from true. And one other benefit of the XR series is they disable the speed limiter that the Falcon/Forte/Fairmont have on them that kicks in at 187km / hr. This is of particular benefit living in NT where there is no speed limit on the open road.
