Hi im new and i have a few questions . I just ordered a XR6HP auto silver ,body kit,17inch,premium sound,momo wheel and knob ,tinting. I was wondering if i should get the oil and oil filter changed at 1500km , i know its first service is not due until 15000km but i don't trust Ford .What new technology did Ford introduced in the AUII over the AUI that increased the first service to 15000km?? . I also won't to know how i should drive the car in its first thousand kilometers or so . Should i keep it under 90km . I know asking how to break an engine in will open up a can of worms :).........Love this site keep up the good work

Personally I don't see the Windsors of today being that much different than those in the 60's except for the obvious.
For your peace of mind change the oil and filter at 1500km won't do any harm to the engine.
The first 500km keep it below 80kmh but drive at different speeds and increase speeds after that .
All you have to do is don't thrash it in the first 1500km.

I changed the oil and filter on mine at 2,000K.
As far as running in goes, there are only a couple of points to bear in mind:
- don't slog the engine ( a bit hard to do with an auto anyway)
- vary the engine load and revs
- don't redline it until at least 5,000K

There's an old saying which says that if u run them in hard they go hard, but the bad side of this is often that they don't go for long:(

You'll find that it won't be REALLY run in until you have 10,000 to 12,000 Ks and up until then fuel consumption will be heavier than normal:p

As a general rule if you keep to under 3-3.5k revs in the first 500-1000k's you should be ok. After that gradually work the motor up to the desired rev range over the next few thousand k's. That's been my experience running in new cars and I've never had any trouble engine wise..

No new technology really. The inline 6 is a proven piece of metal. However, over time engine manufacturers have improved their quality levels and so the fits and clearances are more consistent. This improves the engine build quality.

Having said that, these higher service intervals specified by car manufacturers is a bet based on reducing the overall running costs of their cars. This is important to fleet and lease companies.

I would definitely change oil and filter between 2000 and 5000km. It's real cheap insurance.

Having just ordered a new XR8 I'm guessing that the car will be in at the dealers for some warranty work before 15000km. Call me a skeptic, but I haven't seen it not happen yet.

Ohhh Yeahh

Change that oil baby.

But do yourself a favour, DO NOT USE A CRAPPY FORD DEALERSHIP, find one, and ask to have a tour through the service department, if 14-15 year olds are working out there give that dealership huge miss.

I changed mine at 2000 and 5000 and have had regular services at 5000ks, thats all oil ie diff,gearbox,brake fluid.

Its well worth the investment I rekon

Yeah forgot that one. Change the diff oil before 5000km. My GTS-R had buckets of metal in the diff oil after 3500km. AFter that it settled down - no probs.
Same goes for trans oil. Cheap insurance.

Make sure you run Mineral oil for atleast the first 5000kms so everything can bed in properly.

Old wives tale. Not required. Synthetic still allows bedding in to occur. Holden/HSV/Porsche amongst others factory fill with Mobil 1 synthetic.

My AUII was an EX-Workshop Loan car. So its run in period was problably not observed by the loaners

I beleive it did not get any service PRIOR to its 15,000kms service I did.

It now has 25,000 on the clock and the oil is down 3 notches on the dipstick (By notch I am referring to the little X's on the dipstick)

SO I belive its loosing some oil!

Look after it, change the oil yourself refugularly! Run it in carefully!
