I am looking at buying a XYGT which has come from south africa. Is there anything to look out for and are they as equal as the OZ version in quality and cost. I do understand they have STD interior and lack in some door chrome trim, however it is priced accordingly.
Alot of cars from South Africam, are actually BITSA, they have bits of this and bits of that, they are not 100% the badge thats on them.
I used to work at a garage, and we would have south africans bring cars in for a service, they bought their cars with them from south africa, and you would work on a toyota cresida, but order strut towers for a mazda, and brakes for a fiat, not 100% correct there, but you get the picture.

I can confirm that the Falcon GT was infact built in South Africa. As were Monaros. They are mechanically identical to the Australian version. The differences are cosmetic, as pointed out, the GT has a Fairmont interior and paint scheme.
check out www.falcongtclub.org and filter the discussion forums for South African GT. You will find most of your answers there.
There is also a link to the exporter, who has a website.
Cheers

Imagine all those GT's and part's sitting over there, now I'm upset thinking about it, It's bad enough wondering how many GT's are sitting in old shed's in Australia somewere just rusting away, let alone over there,Noooooo.

I think these cars (even though they were badged as GT's) were more like our Falcon and Fairmont GS.
As previously stated elsewhere, they were a little bit like parts bin special 'bitsa' car.
While living in South Africa in 1970/71, i saw them being built at the Ford plant in Port Elizabeth, along with aussie Fairlanes and utes that, as you know, were badged as Ranchero's.
All this talk reminds me, i must hunt out my old slides and Super8 movies of the South African built Falcons and Holdens that i saw while attending the 1971 South African Motor Show in Pretoria. LOL.

Also I bought my car off a guy who had a XW Fairmont GT. Exactly the same as our GT except it had a futura interior. There's pics all over the web about these cars. Looks weird seeing a XYGT with GS hubcaps
