302 to Boss 302??

I am currently in the process of tear down of a 1968 bronco, I have a 302 that is in need of a rebuild, I will be doing the work. My question is How can I turn my 302 into a boss? or can I at all? Any advice or insight into how to make a boss would be great.

Re: 302 to Boss 302??

To build a Boss 302 Replica engine... You need different heads to start.
Boss Heads are completely a different breed than the normal 302.
It also depends on your performance requirements.
To be honest a Real Boss 302 was only 290 Horsepower. It was there ability to rev extrememly fast that made then the road course killer they were. They operated in the higher rpm range.
But if you would like a fake Boss 302 you can find several websites that tell how they made theirs.
Boss 302 are in the simlpe terms... is a 302 with a beefy bottom end, Screw in freeze plugs and modified 351 4bbl Cleveland heads, large 4 bbl carb. plus high compression. Several other little things also, 4 bolt main and such.
Hope this helps and not just discourage....

Re: 302 to Boss 302??

If your using your Bronco as a 4WD, not a street machine, you get better drivability by just putting a set of 351 windsor heads on your 302. The boss 302 was rated at 290 hp in street trim, about 450 in race trim. But as previously posted, this is at high rpms. Basically a smaller cleveland engine, more of a race engine. These can be built to be strong and streetable, but still cheaper to build up your 302 or a 351 windsor. Cleveland heads are hard to find, not cheap, only made from 1970 to 1974. But if you want a relatively rare engine that can make gobs of power, go for it. I love anything that is different!
