when removing these boxes does the top gear housing have to be removed 1st or somehow get the pin out of the stick from inside-looks like a bit od floorpan bashing?

Around the shifter there is a dome looking piece, it is spring loaded, pus h it down and turn CC and it will pop out and the shifter will lift out.
