Re: 86 Bronco II stuttering on hills, 55 mph

Try it with the injector cleaner and see how it goes after that. The injectors would be dirty especially if the fuel filter hadn't been changed for a while. The pumps would be the last thing to check because you don't really see much difference with them except from when starting. If your finding that the vehicle is geting hard to start, thats a possbile sign there going. Also did you change the air filter, as you said it was due. Maybe that would help a bit to.

Re: 86 Bronco II stuttering on hills, 55 mph

She starts fine, no problems there. I changed the Air Filter today. Friday we are planning on throwing the injectors in a parts washer, and maybe even replacing them depending on wear and gink buildup. Tank of gas is half gone, need to do some more driving! Thanks for the help again, and we shall see how this turns out.

Re: 86 Bronco II stuttering on hills, 55 mph

BTW, I was looking at fule injectors as a possible go, I looked at Bosch units at this page:

I am guessing the injectors fitting an '86 2.9 Ranger will fit my beast? Perhaps not?

Re: 86 Bronco II stuttering on hills, 55 mph

I don't know if you are aware of this, but there are two fuel filters on the BII,
on up by the engine (past second high pressure fuel pump) and one back
on the left side of the frame, nearer to the gas tank. The back one is a small unscrew canister type with a large O-ring seal. (watch the o-rings on re-install!!).

I don't know where you're located, but I had a very similar situation up here
in New York, and it was caused by corrosion. I replaced both pumps, one at a time, both filters and it still came back, but only in cold weather. My wire going to the fuel pump was corroded, and not letting full current get to the pump. That mess of wires on the driver's side near the firewall are subject to getting lots of cr-p splashed on them. They feed power from relays on the passenger side near the air filter. If you still have some problems, check these as well. The pumps can be bought fairly cheaply (40 and 65, I think),
but they didn't do it for me.

Hope this helps,
John
