Question 96 Bronco Rearend Thumping?

Hello all,
I have a 96 Bronco that i purchased used two years ago with 60K,The truck ALWAYS had a Rearend "thump".....from a dead start say from a stop light
when the gas is pressed (i dont have a lead foot) the truck makes one or two slight thumps that jerk the the truck then its fine on the road after that
at ANY speed, This just happens from a start. The truck has now 110K
and the problem is the same no better no worse, I have brought the truck to several mechanics and even a ford factory tech and all say its normal in a bronco.Being the type of person i am I cant accept that as an answer and need to know WHATS CAUSING/WHAT IS THE THUMPING. Any info would be much apprecated............thanks all.

Re: 96 Bronco Rearend Thumping?

I have the same problem with my '96. I had the rear wheels off to replace the drums and shoes and when I turned the hub I figured out what it was. It appears to be play between the drive shaft and the transfer case. It's nice to know it's not serious. Did the mechanics ever say this is where the problem is?

cool Re: 96 Bronco Rearend Thumping?

I've experienced a similar thumping or shuddering when starting from a stop at about 60k miles.

After some asking around, took my '94 Bronco with Ford's factory locking rear end to a local non-Ford transmission specialist. His recommendation was to clean out the housing and change to GL-5 fluid and add what he called Posi-Lube additive, at a total cost under $75 plus tax. That was in 1999, currently the odometer reads 133k with no further occurance.

He also recommended that this procedure be done every 60k, which I did at about 125k.

I am a believer and happy customer.

I have a 1995 Bronco with 180000 miles that i bought new with the handling package. That means it has the rear stablizer bar. That is what you are feeling it only does it when you start.I removed my bar and it quit making the thump.I replaced the bushing on the stadlizer bar and it still thumps.

Re: 96 Bronco Rearend Thumping?

Howdy I have a 1995 EB with 232K and just recently dealt with this. A few guys at fullsizebronco.com suggested I grease the slip joint in the rear shaft. You have to cut the steel bands that secure the rubber flex boot then un bolt the drive shaft at the t-case. When I got mine apart it was tight and appeared to have adequate grease. I added some more grease (Kendall blue bearing grease) gooped it on good. Put it back together and wadda you know...no more klunk. Can't tell you why it works like this it just does. Good luck.

PS, took all of a half of an hour.
