B2 Starter Relay Wiring

A 'newbe' to this site. I need a source for a wiring diagram for an '87, B2 starter relay which is located on the passenger side fender.

I installed a new relay and messed up the location of the small wires: (double-blue; single blue, single black, (red one is OK)). I'm thinking that I have them on the wrong posts and the fuel pump is wired only for the start and not the run position. If no schematic help - a visual check from someone with a B2 - - - looking down on the relay from the pass fender would do fine for an identification position of the wires on the Battery post and Starter post.

I get a fuel pump "click" and "engine ignition" the way I have fastened the wires, but it dies out within 2-seconds. I replaced the fuel-pump relay (the green relay on the pass fender, in between the heater and starter solonoid). Still not starting.

I got one warm day left to get this going before it gets cold again here in the northeast- - - any help will be appreciated.

Re: B2 Starter Solonoid Wiring

I'm pretty sure I have the wiring on the correct relay post so I am writing alert possible others with similar starting problems - - -

I see my problem as:

1) Part failure, (i.e. wiring, relays, pump failure)
or:
2) Rust, (bad grounds to body, motor and frame
or:
3) Mice, ( they made a mess in years past, chewing and pissing on wires).

Still would appreciate any help and advice.

Re: B2 Starter Solonoid Wiring

Hello again - - - (to myself).

It seems as though I am talking, (writing) - and no-one is listening, (reading).

No problem - - - it makes me think better - - - talking to myself.

I learn a lot from other posts' and I have to say "miesk5" has really helped a lot just by reading his comments to other posts with similar problems.

My problem acts as though I 'killed' or detached the 'Inertia switch' up under the heater. That is to say, it starts and runs for about 2-seconds and then dies. Which is why I thought I might have wired the starter relay wrong because it's an electric fuel pump - and is activated by the 'fuel-pump-relay' (the green top on the pass fender wall between the start relay and the heater).

Anyhow - - - I'm taking forum member 'miesk5' advice. In the morning I plan on upgrading my "ground wiring" to the body, frame and motor. I live in the 'rust belt here in the northeast. Which is to say, we do a lot of salt on the roads. On top of that, I have a gravel driveway - which is below grade and always wet. My B2 sets on it and it may as well be sitting on the salt-water beach.

I have kept this sucker going since '87 but my son keeps reminding me that it'll be the best looking B2 in the junk yard if I don't get this fixed soon.

Thanks again for looking - and thinking.

Re: B2 Starter Solonoid Wiring

yo Iker!
Sorry, I thought that I had replied once, but I see my reply did not make it here; maybe due to a server issue or this site's MB proggie (most post dates are scattered)
a few thoughts:
I checked on-line and this wiring diagram(s) is not compat w/your color codes for some reason, esp. since colors change over model yrs at times
http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiB...3d800f9461.jsp
I ck'ed 21 & 22

try asking here:
http://broncoii.org
and they discuss grounds here:
http://broncoii.org/fordforum/index.php?showtopic=1565

Guessing now:
need to check that fp relay socket for corrosion
another guess...poss. a fusible link?...usually in red batty cable close to batty. a guess since it starts and runs
TFI Module? http://www.broncoii.org/Tech%20Pages/eeciv/index.htm

GL!

Re: B2 Starter Solonoid Wiring

Thank you M5 for getting back to me with your thoughts

I am also a member of www.broncoii.org and have posted a few requests on that site as well. So far (since mid Dec.) no one has gotten back to me with a confirmed wiring map of the starter relay.

I found internal and external schematics on www.Autozone.com - but as you mentioned, the wiring colors are a bit off but they do offer a nice pix of the relay. My big problem is the single black wire that was previously attached to one of the two posts. I've tried every combination to no avail. I do get a 'clicking sound' from the fuel-pump-relay which would seem to indicate voltage to the pump.

I have a three-month-old TFI - and I am aware that they blow without warning.

It started raining and snowing here today so I gave up on installing my new ground leads from batt to frame to body etc. Lot's of rust going on with this old B2 and I think much of my electrical's are due to lack of good grounding.

I have noted a lot of 'solidified' white grease on the female plug which mates to my new fuel relay. I suppose it would be a good idea if I took your advice and cleaned out the sockets and apply new grease.

I still keep coming back to the "Inertia fuel-cut-off-switch" only because of the ignition and shutdown occurs within 2-seconds. I don't think its a bad fuel filter or pump because I have lots of pressure. I plan on removing the Inertia switch on the next clear day to run a check on it - could be I got a mouse in the house - up under my carpet taking a snack. I printed out a diagram of it from AdvanceAutoParts - really a helpful site for us DYIer's - thanks for the site I.D. info

I will keep after it and post the outcome ASAP - but only if I can identify the problem. Not too anxious to bust knuckles in 10-20 degree temps.

Thanks again for your thoughts and advice- - -

Re: B2 Starter Solonoid Wiring

Iker,
ok.
I thought about the TFI Module, etc.; guessing it's ok since the ins't heating up enough to cause a heat related fault. But some are known to be crap, esp the hall-effect, etc. if not a Motorcraft part. Had this prob big time in the old 78 Bronco; used a haynes to ts the ignition system to find the prob. It would start & run for hours one day, then no-start or your problem on random days; cold or hot.
It is bitter out!
Giving the inertia switch a try is good!

have to ck the grounds and the fusible link(s).

add to your list checking voltage at the fuel pump connector @ the pump.
connectors there are a common prob too.

M-5:

Can't thank you enough for your research and follow through- - -

Ford has a problem with the illustration at the battery connect and take off wires as shown- - - but, (I guess that by now, it's my problem. )

Talk to you all later.
