I Bought an 86 with a 302 ci from a buddy for $200. He said the timing chain was broken. When I went to remove the thermostat housing to get to the timing chain cover, I pulled the upper rad. hose off and there was some creamy white deposit inside, but only on the hose side of the thermostat. At first I thought blown head gasket, but I pulled the valve covers and they were clean and I don't think there is any coolant in the oil. I'm not the most automotive mechanically inclined(but if you need a helicopter fix let me know) so any help or troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated and would help me get her on the road. Thanks

I can only guess and say calcium deposits.

Calcium adhears to different materials in different ways. If you find it attached to alluminum and rubber but not plastic, my guess would be calcium build up.

Is a calcium deposit something I should worry about?

A creamy white deposit on the underside of the cap indicates that exhaust gases may be leaking into the coolant system. This may be caused by a leak in the cylinder head gasket.

could be something he poured into the hose. like stop leak or something
