Re: excursion diesel turbo problems

turbo chargers are very delcate parts, turbo need to be warmed up prior to be used and need to be cooled before you shut off the engine. If this doesn't happen your turbo will break from the shaft that attaches the fins. Be delicate when using your turbo.

Re: excursion diesel turbo problems

about how long should I let it warm up/cool off? I certainly don't dog it at all and I don't drive like an arse. would lack of letting it warm up/cool off enough expain the rusting and pinging inside it? thanks, Holly

Re: excursion diesel turbo problems

The turbine from the turbo is powered by exhaust gases. Cumbusted fuel (exhaust) has water vapor. Add the high temps of combustion (exhaust), then rust is easy to form, but only on the housing. The moving parts should be made of metals that withstands the rigors of the application.

Turbos typically last at least 50,000 miles and can live beyond 100,000 (I've owned 3 different turbo cars). How long did each of your turbos last (miles)?

Something doesn't sound right. Turbos are cooled with coolant, that's why there are coolant lines going to and from the turbo. Turbos are lubricated by engine oil, and that's why there are oil lines going to and from the turbo.

Not warming up nor cooling down does not cause 2 turbos to fail within 27 months. I've had a used VF30 (with 60,000 miles already on it) go into a WRX and ran it hard for 50,000 more for 3 years until the engine quit with a 40% increase in horsepower.

What did the dealer say the issue was? What caused the turbo failure?

Good luck.

Re: excursion diesel turbo problems

each turbo lasted *about* 9,000 miles. I got the the excursion brand new(abt 300 miles on it and it now has 18,400 miles on it). the dealer said its bc I haven't driven it much/enough/it sits too long. the oil and stuff neeeds to circulate more. sheesh-with diesel prices like they are, I'm driving the expedition more.

Re: excursion diesel turbo problems

I don't know... but the dealer's explaination is not improbable. Since a turbo has coolant and oil lines going in and out of it, letting it sit doesn't help. But once you start the truck, everything should start to circulate.

Why don't you at least start up the truck and let it run 15 minutes or so once a week and see how long this turbo lasts. This is what I do with my generator and motorcycle to keep it from having problems of "sitting too long".

Good luck.
