'01 Taurus with some problems. need help - Ford Forums

My brother has an 01 Taurus that has the CEL on. Well he went to Iraq, and I thought that for a coming home present that I would fix it up for him. I went to an auto parts store to have them pull the codes and this is what I got.

P1506 Manufacture Control Vehicle Speed Control
P1131 Fuel Air Metering
P1151 Fuel Air Metering
PO171 System to Lean Bank 1
PO174 System to Lean Bank 2
PO303 Cylinder 3 Misfire
PO304 Cylinder 4 Misfire

My question is where do I begin? I was planning on putting in a new Coil, wire and plugs, but do not want to do this till I figure out why it is running lean, because I would hate to foul out the plugs.

Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Vulcan or Duratec Engine??? P1506 is Idle Air Control Overspeed Error.
P1131 is Lack of Heated O2 Sensor 1/1 Switch, Sensor Indicates Lean.
P1151 is Lack of Heated O2 Sensor 2/1 Switch, Sensor Indicates Lean.
P0171 is Bank 1 Fuel System Lean. P0174 is Bank 2 Fuel System Lean. The misfire codes are correct. I'd be looking for a major vacuum leak right about now. If a Duratec the intake manifold gaskets are known for leakage. look for and fix the vacuum leak before chasing a misfire. The vacuum leak MAY be causing it to misfire.

It has the 24V DOHC. Dont remember if its duratec or vulcan.

Whats the best way to find a vacuum leak?

24V is a Duratec. Listen for a loud hissing noise. With the engine overspeed code and lean codes, you would most likely hear it pretty good. You will hear a hiss type noise with a plastic intake, but after a few minutes it should be relatively quiet. Check for disconnected vacuum lines too.
