My 03 Taurus was working fine when suddenly the tranny just quit working. I was on a 5 min drive to McDonalds and it quit working in the parking lot and coasted to a parking spot. Moving the selector to D or R has no impact, no rpm change and no hint of any emgagement. The selector seems to work; when I moved the selector to P and tried to manually push the car it was obviously locked in park. The fluid level checks to be okay. The car has 70 K miles. Any ideas?

Hello and good day:

Did you notice any Fluid leaking from the bottom of the car???

If not I would have to guess it would be the Torque Converter ... Very expensive to repair, and not for a Shade Tree Mechanic.


Also did you hear any other sounds coming from the engine before this happen???

No, no leaks and no noises. I was hoping for a blown fuse or something electrical rather than mechanical. I'll get it towed to a transmission shop and brace myself for the worst.

Hmmm!!

I don't believe it would be a electrical issue. There is a possibility that the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) would have gone. But it would not make the car not go into Drive.

The Taurus has been loaded on a trailer & I'll get it to a repair shop later today. If the issue is the torque converter; would it have destroyed the whole transmission or would it be possible to just replace the converter and flush the system? Are there tests to determine how much is bad?
