1996 Sable Heater Core
Recently I noticed a bit coolant smell coming out of the heater vents in my 1996 Sable. My mechanic did a cooling system pressure check and confirmed leaking in the heater core. The repair estimate is $650! He says it takes 6 hours, so most of this is labor.
Another issue is that with the heater off and the windows cracked slightly, hot air is sucked out of the heater vents. This is actually when I noticed the coolant smell the most. With the heater on I actually don't really notice it much. My mechanic says this is probably a problem with a ventilation door not closing in the box that holds the heater core, but can't confirm this until he rips it out. If so, it will cost extra to repair or replace.
Is there anything else I can try to fix the leak? The cooling system has never had any problems before (no leaks and coolant always in good shape). I was wondering if it would be a good idea to try one of the radiator leak additives.
Thanks,
Chris
