Question 1998 Taurus won't start sometimes

I have a 1998 Taurus 3.0 V6 OHV. It's not being consistent, so it's hard to troubleshoot. It will start sometimes and then it won't. In order to get it to start (when it doesn't), I have to remove the intake hose, hold the throttle open, spray starting fluid into the throttle body, connect the intake hose back, and then it starts. It will do this cold or hot. I've replaced the fuel filter and checked fuel pressure. I don't believe this is a fuel pump issue, because once it starts it will continue to run.

Is there anything I can check before I tear apart the intake and replace the injectors?

Thanks

Does it ever start without using the ether when in the "no start" condition?

If it's not a fuel problem I don't see how the ether will help. Next time it does not start see if you have 5V at the TPS connector when the key is in run.

What's the TPS connector? I'm thinking it's dirty fuel injectors. Could that be the problem?

Are you saying that it could be the fuel pump?

The TPS is the throttle position senor mounted on the throttle body.

Well if you had fuel you wouldn't be needing to use ether. It may be flooding too. This can be cured by cranking with the gas pedal floored while cranking.

Could it be clogged fuel injectors? I'm just kind of leery about the fuel pump, because once it starts, it runs just fine. If the fuel pump was bad wouldn't it die after it started with the ether? I'm just a novice, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

If flooding was the issue, what could be causing it to flood all the time?

Thanks for all your help...

To test the fuel pump you need to see what the pressure is. Or you can push down on the "tire valve" located on the fuel rail. Do not do this when the engine is running as fuel will squirt out. If you crank it. Then push down on the valve fuel should come out.

This is also where you connect the fuel pressure gage to test. Should be 40 lbs when cranking, 30-35 lbs when running.

Flooding can be caused by leaky injectors or a bad fuel pressure regulator diaphragm.

Just now I went out and it started right up. Then I shut it off, waiting about 5 minutes and tried it and it wouldn't start. This is so annoying. The TPS shows 5 volts with the key turned on.

Then I would suspect the crank position sensor if you have one.

You have one, should be on the front of the engine, next to the crankshaft pulley.
