2000 Mercury Sable - Rough idle on start and CEL

hey, we have a 2000 Mercury Sable that has recently started giving us some problems. A few days ago, the car would idle very roughly on startup, but not stall. after about 10 minutes the idle would return to normal and the car would be fine. If the car is off for a while and i start it again, I have the same problem. After a few days, the check engine light came on and the problem is still persisting. Any idea what this could be? I read a few places it could be a bunch of sensors, dirty intake manifold, bad intake gasket, or just a leaky vacuum line. How can i diagnose the problem? Where is the most common place to look for this sort of problem? thanks

Hello and good day:

You have a bad,,,cracked,,,Coil Pack.......Please check this Link...

Ignition coil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If not the Coil Pack you may have a bad Spark Plug in Number 6 cylinder...or a bad Spark Plug Wire...

Now I believe on your Vehicle you have individual coil packs on each cylinder. Can you give us some more information on the Size of the Engine...is it a 3.0 Dohc..24v??? or something else???

Please keep us advise..

He already answered this. A Duratec is a 3.0L DOHC 24V. The Vulcan is a 3.0L OHV (commonly mistaken as a SOHC). 2000 Duratec had individual coils, which can be failure prone. Don't do the coil alone, the plug is most likely carbon tracked along with the coil. No plug wires. #6 is the front bank, outside left, next to the breather hose.

Re: 2000 Mercury Sable - Rough idle on start and CEL

thanks for the info.. coils were really easy to remove. is this #6's coil?

i compared this plug with the plug all the way on the right, and they both looked the same. local auto part places sells the coil for $75.. should i just go grab one and a plug? i would like to change all the plugs but it seems like the other 3 are hard to get to. are they?

That's the # 4 coil. 6 is closest to the battery

Cool thanks. picked up a new coil for $80 with tax and installed it.. so far so good. I'll have to wait until tomorrow morning when the car has been cold for a while to see if its still having the problem. no more check engine light though.

So I left the hood open for a few hours outside and tried it again.. seems like the problem is still happening. what else could this be? no new CEL's yet though.

You didn't say if you replaced the spark plug either. If you didn't, take it out and takes some pictures of it. Post them here. If it has a black line running down the porcelin insulator it's carbon tracked, and needs to be replaced.

Re: 2000 Mercury Sable - Rough idle on start and CEL

The plugs were all fine when I checked them.

I actually wound up taking it to a shop my friend works at.. turns out that it was a worn intake gasket that was letting in too much air in the 6th cylinder.
