2000 taurus check engine light

Hi everyone. I bought this 2000 taurus back in Dec. of 06 for my mom. It still doesn't pass inspection. The DPFI was bad, and I replaced that. BUT the check engine light never came on, which is why I didn't think it was spitting codes, which it actually was. So why wouldn't the check engine light work? Bulb in the gauge cluster? Fuse? Anything else you would recommend? Thanks!

Bulb in the cluster is easy to check. Turn key on. It should light for about two seconds. It's a bulb check cycle

Remove the cluster to change the bulb. Tips? Well, all I can say is take your time and you will win.

Re: 2000 taurus check engine light

yea i think it was done to hide something. it was throwing codes; p0171 (bank 1 lean), and p0174 (bank 2 lean), and p1401. I changed the DPFI, and now I think i'm going to change the pvc valve, and check all the rubber hoses and fittings for leaks. Hopefully that'll take care of the codes and I can finally get the car inspected.

I'd clean that MAF sensor as well.

2000-2007 Taurus/Sable cluster no longer have replaceable warning light bulbs, they are LED's soldered to the printed circuit board. Last time I checked, you have to buy the whole cluster to fix this.

Re: 2000 taurus check engine light

just pulled the cluster, and it actually still has replaceable bulbs. I replaced the check engine light with a bulb that i knew worked, and it still doesn't light up during the cycle. Now i'm starting to get scared. What else could cause this? Is there a wire for the check engine light that I can check to see if it has been cut or something? Thanks for all the help!
