2001 Ford Taurus P0460 Code Trouble

I own a 2001 Ford Taurus and my check engine light comes on periodically when the fuel level sensor climbs from it's "correct' level to a full tank- even though no additional fuel has been added to the tank. When I check the OBD-II codes a single P0460 code is returned.

I have researched the P0460 code, and I am aware that it indicates some kind of fuel circuit malfunction. As yet I haven't found anyone with any success eliminating this P0460 code on a Taurus. Does anybody have any experience with this problem?

Re: 2001 Ford Taurus P0460 Code Trouble

I also have a 2001 with the same problem. Same code, check engine light came on right at 36k, I now have 88k and I learned to live with it. Fuel gauge either reads full or empty but never works. I'm just waiting for the fuel pump to go out and see if a replacement fixes it.

The way I deal with it is fill the tank and after aprox 300 miles its time to fill again. It would be less of course with alot of city driving.

This car has been nothing but a headache since the first month we had it. Its turned out to be a 17k pile of junk, its plagued with problems that Ford should have recalled instead of "service bulletins" issued.

I work at a technical institution that teaches automotive technology and it really pisses my local Ford dealer off when I bring them the car and they say oh, we've never seen that problem before, then I hit em with the service bulletins from Alldata

To sum it up, I refuse to pay Ford another red cent for repairs, I will never buy another Ford! Come on you die hard Ford fans, admit it, They are junk!

Sorry, but we Ford nuts don't die easy. My 2001 Taurus SEL has 44,000 mi. on it now and not a lot of things go wrong with this car since I bought it in December of 2004. Other than some preventative mainteneance the original owner did't do I've had to replace very little parts. A couple door actuators, a LF door latch that I stupidly replaced for a door opening problem I eventually fixed by adjusting the door. A DPFE sensor, a blend door actuator, an autolamp sensor, a headlight switch because the old owner had the aftermarket alarm removed and they broke the bezel of the switch. I had to replace the spark plugs because some disreputable shop switched the front spark plugs for worn out ones on the original owner. A week later, the plug wires because of my stupidity I thought I could get away with reusing the 4 year old plug wires. Otherwise, the car has been extremely reliable. By the way, this is a dumb question but if you were unsatisfied with your Ford Dealer, why didn't you just go to another Ford or Lincoln/Mercury Dealer???

That code means that a fuel pump replacement will be needed to properly fix it.

Re: 2001 Ford Taurus P0460 Code Trouble

Although I feel like I've had more than my fair share of maintenance trouble with my 2001 Taurus over 80K miles, it hasn't had that much more work done on it than my girlfriend's "reliable" 2002 Toyota Camry with 65K miles... Every car has it s bad days.

So far, I too have learned to live with resetting the trip odometer every 300-350 miles in order to avoid running on empty, but would like to be sure my symptoms match a failing fuel pump before laying out the $200+ for a new fuel pump.

If my problem is related to the fuel pump, as opposed to some kind of sensor problem, would the fuel gauge still work periodically? Many times I start up the car and the fuel gauge seems correct only to have it max out later in my short trip. On longer trips, the gauge is probably right about 50% of the time.

Re: 2001 Ford Taurus P0460 Code Trouble

I had P0460 come up on a 2001 Ford Taurus with a flexible fuel system. Gas gauge did not function properly. I changed the sender wiring assembly very easy cost me $60 from a Ford dealership only. Dedending on where you are from it could be cheaper. http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=40573 This site gives you a part number and pictures on how easy it is. On some models it will be behind the radio. Radio removal kits are cheap though.
