confused 2001 Mercury Sable A/C problem

My A/C has a new problem this year. It starts up cooling extremely and issues very cold air; all seems well for 10-15 minutes, after which the compressor apparently shuts down and the system blows hot air. If I shut down the A/C system entirely (press the OFF button) and wait 10-15 minutes and then turn it on again, it works fine again for another 10-15 minutes and then repeats the problem. My mechanic has checked the system for suction, temp gages etc. and sees no problem. He has not solved this yet.
This all happens even on very mild days (Spring in New England).
Any ideas?

Question Re: 2001 Mercury Sable A/C problem

Do the radiator fans come on at all??? If the fans don't come on the high side pressure will skyrocket and the clutch will be turned off early. The A/C won't be cool enough when this happens.

The "radiator fans?" I'm not sure what you mean. The circulating fans in the passenger area constantly blow very strongly, so there's plenty of airflow. The main radiator fan in the engine compartment does run normally. It seems as if the computer is sending a bad command to the system.

There are 2 radiator fans. You could have one not working.
