2001 Mercury Sable LS - EATC Problem

Hi,
I have a 2001 Sable LS with 67,000 miles. I was wondering if anyone may have encountered the issue I'm currently having. Today my climate control started blowing very hot air on the highest blower setting. No matter what I tried doing, nothing but hot air kept blowing out, full blast.

It was very warm in my car when I started it, so I'm assuming it was trying to run my A/C but for some reason that air wasn't getting into the car. I checked the A/C compressor and lines, and it appeared everything was ok with them.

I read online where you can run a diagnostic on the EATC, which I did. I received a code "051" & "025". After that it seemed like my A/C problem was fixed and everything seemed to be working ok. I cleared out the codes and waited another 15 minutes or so and tried running the diagnostics again to see if there were any new codes. I am now just getting the "051" code, but everything seems to be working ok.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should do next? I don't know if I should be looking to replace the "solar radiation sensor", or if maybe it's my "Temperature blend door" failing. I just don't understand why I'm still getting the "solar radiation sensor open" code now that everything appears to be working ok. I imagine I'm going to have more problems to come, so I'm hoping to head it off now if possible. Thanks in advance for any info you might be able to give me.

I had that same problem about a year ago,.. and I did the samething that you have done. it's still holding good.. sometimes the door just gets jammed due to the weather temp.,etc.. if it is hoding,.. I would not worry about it.. for mine is hoding after year or so.. good luck..

Thanks for the info jc01sable2x. I tried calling the Ford dealer today to see about price & availability of the "Solar Radiation Sensor", and he said he's never heard of it. I don't understand why I'm getting this error code if the part doesn't exist, but oh well. Hopefully mine will be like yours and not act up again. Thanks again.

Hi there,

my wife's 2001 Taurus has been having the same problem for about two years now. In the colder months everything works fine. When the temperature goes up, EATC goes haywire, sets the temp to the max, blower fan to full speed and directs the air to the windshield. My codes are 051 and 195. Additional symptom which you do not mention is that when this happens, the EATC happily responds to the buttons, displaying the changes in settings, but nothing actually happens. Pressing the "off" button shuts off the display, but the air is still blowing.

Sometimes, both the EATC and the radio stop responding. Radio can't be powered on/off, volume can't be adjusted, station can't be changed -- nothing. It just locks up.

I was going to start looking for another headend, but I'm wondering if there isn't a problem with wiring. I'll look into that first.
