Hello all I m new here and need help--I have a 2001 taurus with a duratec that idle very rough. I was getting misfire codes on 1,5,6, but not now. I put plugs and wires and a new coil on it a few months ago as well as replaced the PCV valve and hose. Today I replaced the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets along with the orings where the injecters seat into the manifold. I also replaced the IAC solenoid on top of the throttle body with no improvement. Car will idle smoothly if I unplug the IAC valve and turn to crap instantly on reconnect.when unplug it idles a little lower than normal--any advice is greatly appreciated

WOW!! this is a puzzler ... Do you still get a Misfire Code after replacing the Coil Pack???

The only thing I can think would cause additional Idling would be the MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor) is either Dirty, or non functioning.

There are some friend here that could offer some better ideas (Jwko, Tbird, BigBlock, 360ci, etc) I will P/M them for some more advise on this...they may have a clue.

I agree with Sterling6, clean and check the MAF. Also, check to make sure the EGR valve is seating properly. If it's not, and you're getting ANY EGR flow at idle, it will run rough.

If you have access to scan tool data, it would be nice to see the values for short and long term fuel trim to see how much fuel the computer is adding. That would indicate a vacuum leak.

Oh, and check the shaft seals on the IMRC. Sometimes they leak air.

2000 and newer Duratecs didn't have IMRC. Just regular runners. Definetely check the MAF sensor and clean if necessary. There is a specific cleaner for MAF sensors. Also check to see if the throttle body is dirty. If dirty, remove it, remove the TPS and IAC valve, and clean it with carb clean. Make sure you clean the IAC passages on the TB. An OLD toothbrush comes in handy to scrub the bore and TV. IAC is a little hard to clean, just make sure you hold the solenoid end up when cleaning, and allow to try before reinstalling. After re-assembly, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. this will clear the adaptive memory. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, allow it to idle a few minutes, then take it for a drive around town, and on the highway. This will get the adaptives to start reseting. You should see a difference now in how it runs.
