I don't know about the dimming mirror. How would I be able to tell? When I read through my post I realize I forgot to mention why I only think the color was orange/green. The wire looks like it has got hot and all the insulation has melted off. It looks like the paper clip was attached to it sometime after the insulation melted off though, as I removed some of the electrical tape around it I did not see any insulation underneath. There is no remote starter that I know of either. I assume the knee blocker panel you speak of is the panel just under the steering wheel. I have had it off to look but not currently. There is no fuse box cover and the cover that is usually over the bottom left portion of the fuse box where the wiring harness connects is also missing. This is why I can see the actual wire connections well, and I see where the wire was apparently connected originally because the connector is still in place. Does any of this help? I can try and get a picture if you think it will help. Thanks.

Re: 2001 Taurus temperature control knob

I forgot to mention that I did remove the actuator. The door seems to function ok. I moved the lever manually and could get different temp. air through the vents. I found a pdf file on another site that is for diagnosing problems with the blend door actuator. I would post a link but don't know if it is ok to post links to other sites here. Looks like I need to invest in a multimeter. From what you say the actuator is a common problem so perhaps I will just replace it if you think that best. Thanks again.

Re: 2001 Taurus temperature control knob

I picked up an actuator at a salvage yard today while on my lunch break from work. I connected it up without actually mounting it, just to see if it functioned as I expected. It does not seem to do anything when I adjust the temp. control knob as I would expect. Maybe I should have pulled the knob from the vehicle in the salvage yard too, I just did not have much time. I seem to be collecting parts now I have the temp. blend door actuator and the power window master control switch, neither of which resolved my problems. Tell ya what, I'll know more about this car than I wanted by the time I am done. I really appreciate the info I have been given so far, Thanks.

Well, I got a multimeter to work out the problem with the temp. control. Turns out that the wire hanging down with the insulation burned off is supposed to proved the near battery voltage to the blend door actuator. I'll have to trace the wire under the dash so that it can be replaced. Not a good idea to leave a 12V wire exposed with no insulation. Now I'll have to take the multimeter to the window wiring. Hope I can make sense of the test steps you posted in another thread. Wish me luck :)
