2002 taurus se rear speaker removal

Does anyone know how to remove the rear seat backrest and parcel shelf on a 2002 taurus sedan in order to install some new speakers? I'm getting very frustated trying to figure it out and there is no Haynes or Chiltons manual for the car.

Thanks!

cool Re: 2002 taurus se rear speaker removal

First pull up on the front of the rear seat cushion while pushing the cushion reaerward. When the front hook disengages lift the seat cushion out. Next, if you have 60/40 rear fold down seat backs fold down the seat backs. Around where the seatbacks latch there is a screw on each side. Remove these screws. Directly below these on the bottom near where the seat backs pivot there is a screw on each side. Remove these screws and pivot the whole seat back out on the bottom. The top of the seatback assy. just slides down from behind the hook of the package tray. The package tray carpet is held down with christmas tree fasteners. Just pry these up and you can lift up the package tray to access the speakers. Oops!!! I almost forgot... you have to remove your high mount stoplamp first. Just pry the front of it up slightly and slide it towards the front of the car. You may have to remove the D-pillar trim panels to lift the tray up. If you don't have a 60/40 seat then there is just bolts on the bottom of the seat back. The seat back pivots out the same a the 60/40 back. Good luck!!!

Re: 2002 taurus se rear speaker removal

Thanks tbird. I have the kind of seats that don't fold down. I figured it out this weekend and put in some 5 x 7 alpine speakers but could not get all the holes to line up for the speakers so for now, i'm just using 2 holes for each speaker. I haven't screwed the seats back down yet so I'll attempt get the speakers mounted again correctly in the next few days.
