Re: 2003 Ford Taurus

The wiring harness was the hardest part. Luckily I had help from my brother. He held that up so I could get to the synchronizer. I figure from start to finish, about an hour. I must have did it right because it is still running. I just want to thank you for all your help. You and this forum saved me a few hundred dollars.

Re: 2003 Ford Taurus

I have 2001 taurus 3.0 SE and same noise from the camshaft sensor. I could remove the throttle assembly cover and the coolant hose. But how exactly can I remove the wiring harness? Can anyone explain more detail? Where is the 10 ft of black tape that jwko mentioned? I ordered the camshaft synchronizer assembly to autopartsgiant.com at $40 (s&h included). But I need to move the harness at least a few inches.

Re: 2003 Ford Taurus

Finally I could reach the sensor. When I opened it, there was no debris or detached magnetic at all. On the side wall of the sensor, there magnetic looking black circle and small 'c' shape was still on the synchronizer. So I closed it back and the noise is gone. But when I drive and make turn, if I step on the accelerator, I got a hiccup. Any idea?

Re: 2003 Ford Taurus

Thanks jwko for the detailed information on this cam syncronizer/sensor problem. I got on top of this as soon as it started making the chirping noise. I'm not mechanically inclined (kind of like a surgeon working with boxing gloves on) so the local Ford dealer is going to replace the parts for $236. You mentioned to tistanle to get it fixed before it siezed up and done some real damage. What could the Ford service manager been thinking when he told me it would be ok to drive the car until the parts arrived and were installed? It just makes me feel warm all over....lol.

Re: 2003 Ford Taurus

The assembly is gear driven off the cam gear. If it totally siezed up it could shear the pin holding the gear on the assembly allowing the gear to fall into the block, shear the teeth off the assembly or the cam gear or both. It will probably be ok to drive it some, just keep a ear on the sound and if it become worse or a constant squeal I would park it till it's fixed.
