mad 2003 Taurus no power HELP!

I have an issue where the car has no power and would not go faster than 10MPH on a hill. Its a 2003 with 3.0L "U" engine with 196,000 miles. I replaced the fuel filter which was very dirty evidenced by the fuel that came out. I also had a CEL. Found code for cam position sensor and replaced that. Here is a recap of all I did. Spark plugs changed six months ago, ignition coil replaced, spark plug wires replaced, Fuel filter, fuel pump and filter replaced. No foreign debris in tank. Dropped exhaust and ran car, still the same. Removed exhaust Y pipe and knocked out catalyst. While cat was down ran engine, still the same. Car idles fine no issues, rev the car up and it wont go past 4000 RPM, engine sounds muffled with no balls at all. I replaced the cam synchronizer. It cost me 193 with tax. NO DIFFERENCE. I also noticed that the engine has little vacuum. I can feel when I back down the driveway that I have no brake assist. Pull a vacuum hose at idle and it feels like nothing. The engine idles fine no knocks, no ticking, doesnt burn oil, no smoke has no CEL. Cant figure this thing out.

Have you checked the compression? If it's low, you may have a timing chain problem. How about the vacuum reading at idle and holding 2000 rpm. Chipset comes in here often and will more than likely have the answer for you.

Have not checked the compression. I was thinking timing chain but ruled it out because I figured this is a low interference engine and I would have bent a valve. I drive this car five days a week and put over a hundred highway miles a day on it so if the chain jumped I figure it would have bent valves. The vacuum I have to still check with a gauge.

" it won't go past 4000 RPM " . Normal. Called a rev limiter. You have solved your own
problem. YOU HAVE NO VACUUM. I'm pretty sure that engine has a plastic intake manifold. They are famous for microscopic cracks in the plastic under the water pump
area. Bottom line. You have to get the engine vacuum back.

Re: 2003 Taurus no power HELP!

It doesn't seem to have balls even in neutral when I rev it. It used to pop right up quick. It does have a plastic air intake that attaches to the center of the engine. Did a visual inspection and dont see any cracks. Sprayed brake clean and WD40 but didnt do anything. Dont have carb cleaner right now. I'll spray carb cleaner in the area tomorrow to see if I find it. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the responses.

Well Chipset& rtg143.... 160 bucks later for an intake, gaskets as well as an EGR sensor that broke during removal because it was brittle and the car is still the same. I went with the intake like you suggested because I hooked up a vacuum gauge and confirmed that the engine does in fact have low vacuum. It was reading 12 to 13 at idle. When I rev'ed the engine it dropped to 0. I sprayed carb cleaner on different parts of the intake and when I sprayed the underside of the intake the engine ran slightly smoother and when I rev'ed it, the vacuum went to 20 and slowly dropped down but like I said it is no better now after changing the intake. In fact now the engine barely makes it to 2000 rpm in neutral when i rev it. Any other ideas before I push this thing to the dealer and get raped.

If the vacuum drops when you rev it and stays low, there's a blockage somewhere in the exhaust. At idle it should be around 20 and when you accelerate, it should drop to almost zero and climb back up to at least 15. If not I'd loosen the exhaust headers in front of the cats and see what it does.

Or if accessable enough remove the Upstream O2 Sensor (Don't unplug them, just remove from the manifolds). If the car runs better you have restricted cats.

mad Re: 2003 Taurus no power HELP!

I dropped the exhaust y pipe to eliminate all three cats and ran the car with out the exhaust connected and it still ran the same. Went ahead and decided to check the timing chain also which was a waste because after removing the cover I found there was nothing wrong with it. Changed the chain and gears anyway while I had it apart. Now the damn EGR sensor hose pops off when I accelerate and it actually feels like it has a little more power when its off. This would indicate a restriction in the exhaust but like I said I checked that already. This car has me nuts.

Have you every resolved the issue with your car? I am having pretty much the same symptons with my 2000 Taurus 3.
