2004 Ford Taurus.. Are tire belts shifting?.

Are tire belts shifting?
I recently purchased a 2004 Ford Taurus with very low mileage (70,000 Kilos/43,500 Miles) from a friend.

There are 4 Firestone tires, 215/60R16 size on the Ford.....tires are approx. 6 months old with 90% tread.

I have noticed a lumpy/bumpy ride at certain speeds. The lumpy feel to the ride is noticeable between 80 km/hr or 50 mi/hr to 100 km/hr or 60 mi/hr.....This lumpy ride does not seem to appear at speeds higher such as 100 km/hr or 60 mi/hr... but will appear from time to time at very low speeds (40 km/hr).

There is no vibration or shaking of the steering wheel at any speed so I assume the tire balance is OK.....Could this be the tire belts starting to shift or separate?....Any advice?.... Thanks

I'd still have the balance checked.

Also make certain that tire pressure is correct. Highways are generally smoother than city streets. I would get the front end checked out. As Bert said, start with a balance.

Firestone makes some excellent tires. As you stated the tires aren't thirteen years old or have been retreaded (illegal on steer tires by the way), so I wouldn't be overly concerned about the tires.
