I have a 2004 Ford Taurus. I have picked up a crankshaft sensor at Auto Zone, was told it was easy to install...can't find it..can anyone please help

It's mounted to the front engine cover, toward the passenger compartment.

I have a 2002 Taurus with a Duratec 3.0L. It is stumbling on the crank. Sometimes it gets better as car warms up, but it is getting worse. It finally threw a check engine light yesterday after 2 weeks of this.

It is throwing a 303 code (misfire on 3) and a 316 (possible Crankshaft Position Sensor failure). I am trying to figure out how to replace the CPS. My Chilton manual says to remove bolt and replace, but the instructions from autozone sound HIGHLY comlicated (removing accessory belt unbolting generator). Is there an easier way?

Find the misfire on cyl. #3 first. It's probably the coil pack for the misfire. The P0316 usually means the misfire was detected at a very low RPM, like cranking. If you fix the misfire, it'll probably fix that code too.

Thank you for the advice. What could the misfire be though? I mean, I replaced the plugs and wires about 10k miles ago, so I can pull off the cowl (20 Minutes) to get to Cyl 3 and check the wire connection on the cyl and condition of the plug. I can check the wire connection on the coil, but other than that, what would I do - replace the coil pack? (not sure how to diagnose)

What's the 8th digit on your vin?

Vin digit 8 is an "S".

I did pull the 3 wire off of the coil pack end. I don't see any damage per se. It did seem to be a little better when I re-seated the wire, but I thought I could still feel a little roughness intermittently at idle in drive and neutral. Light is still on, but I assume you have to clear it explicitly or wait for a few key on / key off cycles.

It does take a while to clear. Why not switch coils and see if the problem follows?

You mean buy a new coil pack? It $75, but you're right - probably worth it to pull it and try it first. You wouldn't replace the spark plug first before the coil?

It depends on how the plug looks. Usually when only one plug shows a problem, it's the fire to it. You can switch the coils to see what happens and look at the plug. If there's Champion plugs in it, I'd replace them all.
