My wife and I were test driving 2004 and 2005 taurus's this past weekend. All the ones we test drove were either the SES or SEL with the 24 valve 200hp V6 duratec engine. We noticed that sometimes, at a stoplight, when you first start it, or right before you shut it off, basically at idle, the needle for the rpm's would fluctuate. The needle wouldn't move much, it would just kind of hover/slight bounce around 1,000 rpm's. It didn't happen on every taurus, but it did happen on more than one and it was not consistant on any of the ones we drove. At first I thought it might have been the timing that was off, but then I realized that these fancy new cars have computers or sensors that control the idle and you really can't adjust it anymore. I am not sure what this could be or is this just a newer taurus thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My 01 Taurus SEL doesn't come back up to 1000rpm before shutting off, only at startup, which after a minute or two of warm-up it drops down to 600 rpm. Just a guess, but I work at a Dodge Dealer and when Dodge started putting EGR valves back on the 3.3L engine in Caravans they said in a technical update that the engine will idle at 1000 rpm for one of the EGR monitors to check certain parameters of the system's operation. This might be what you experienced.
I have a 2000 Ford Taurus that I have owned since it was new. This occurred on mine starting in Spring of 2004 and got so bad that I finally had to take it to the dealer. It got really get bad at stop lights to the point where the vehicle would actually surge a bit. The needle would fluctuate and the engine would surge with the RPM's going from 700 to 1000 and back and forth. It was some sort of sensor that they fixed and it cost about $190 to fix. It has been fine since.
