2005 Taurus Airbag Light - Ford Forums

I just purchased a 2005 Taurus and it has the airbag light on. When I turn the car on it flashes 4x then 2x, then stays on so I believe it is telling me a code of "42".

Can someone tellme what this means so I don't have to spend $100 at a dealer?

Spoke to the dealer today, and they tell me the 4-2 code indicates an error with the front crash sensor. Likely a bad sensor, or bad connection. Does anyone know where the front crash sensor is located on the 2005 Taurus? I can get the part from the dealer for $130k so it would be much cheaper than having them diagnose and replace.

It's located behind the grill under the hood latch assembly. If you look through the grill, behind the ford emblem you can see it. Should be a black box with a sticker that reads Front Crash Sensor. Try unplugging & cleaning the wire contacts before you buy a new one.

I have been reading some of the forums and post reference to this problem. and what I have see is there is some type of Electrical Connector (Yellow) that may be the problem.

Would this cause the same?

I have a 1999 Escort, that after driving for 20 to 30 minutes the A/L will flash. but I have never counted the flashes.

If I do this should I count the flashing sequence????

JWKO, thank you for the tip, I was going to try that first, and inspect the connector. The dealer did mention they replace the connector and the sensor when they to the service.

Sterling, yes, when you first start the vehicle, the light will flash (in my case 4x) then a brief pause (1 second), then flash again (2x), then a long pause (3 seconds?), then repeat, and repeat again, then turn on permanently.

OK, it is DEFINATELY the sensor behind the grille. I tried to unplug and re-connect, but the sensor broke (quite easily I might add) in the process.

I will get a new sensor and connector today and try it tonight. Thank you for the tips.

Update: I bought a new sensor for $130 and a new connector for $35 (could only get them from the dealer), replaced the connector, soldering the leads and used plenty of dielectric grease to keep the corrosion from happening again.

Problem solved. Took less than 30 minutes.
