Attach your rig as if you're going to charge it again. If the pressure gauge reads low or dips low as the compressor cycles on, you've lost charge and you have a leak.
Just to add that if you're using a store bought can of refrigerant without proper pressure gauges attached to the system, stop. You can still undercharge the system, or worse, overfill it and cause more problems along with wasting your money.
To add, if you start/shut off the vehicle with the air flow knob on ANY of the defrost settings, stop this. Make sure the fan is on floor or vent only so when you start/stop the vehicle, the A/C compressor isn't running. It will save undue stress on components down the road.
