I have an 1989 Mercury Sable. Not the wagon.

Question #1: There is too much pressure in the gas tank. Every time I open the gas tank it releases the pressure. Gas gauge reads empty until I release the pressure. Now car won't start hot or cold until I release the pressure. What is happening?

Question #2: The gas gauge is acting funny. Reads over full when I put gas in then stays at full. Once it starts getting low it will occasionally go from full to 3/4 then 1/2 the 1/4 then low fuel light. I then release pressure by taking off gas cap and it goes back to full.

Question #3: I am trying to find a replacement for the suspension lower arm strut. This name is taking right out of a picture in Chilton.

Please help. My boyfriend is the mechanic and can pretty much do it all. I am the computer person so that is why I signed up for this forum.

Hmmm... Pressure in the tank... the cap should relieve some pressure... If a tank or evaporative emissions vent were plugged the tank would start to collapse (suck in) on itself. I'll have to find my 90 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual.
The gauge acting funny may be the sending unit in the tank, which may not be replaceable seperately from the fuel pump, so the fuel pump would have to be replaced. The struts you're talking about is the rear tension struts. They go from the mounting brackets on the floor pans to the rear spindles.
