The "cup" can be pried from the transmission with a large screwdriver .. but I have never felt the urge to go that far. I usually leave that part alone and just replace the shaft from the tripod assembly down to the wheel spline .. the transmission "cup" (outer race) recieves little wear so my opinion is that getting too close to the transmission is tempting disaster.
If only the CV joint is shot, you can limit costs by "knocking off" just the CV joint with a brass driver (rod or pipe) while holding the shaft in a vise (use soft material to cushion vise jaws).
