Noticed today that the cover left of the instrument cluster actually hides a connector. What controls would that be for? Power windows? This car has none, as well as no power door locks for some inexplicable reason. Which is actually why I call it Life on Mars...
Interesting, the dealership parts guy I asked today was trying to tell me that the dash around this cover would be looking different if there was a control unit. But when I look at this pic of a 92 Sable it clearly shows this is not the case. Can you confirm this is for the auto light timer? Is the wiring and sensors all set up to work once I plugged this in?
I'm not sure if any further wiring is complete for it to work. It needs a sensor, amplifier and relay to be operative. Here's the wiring diagram for that part. The other part is with the headlight circuit.
That would be for the rear window defrost. Do you have the owners manual? As far as I can tell, the switch for the auto lamp timer is next to the headlight switch. The module is in that area, but without a car to look at, I can't help more than that. The module in my repair manual shows the connector to it heading forward. Tha way that connector in you picture shows, it probably is for the rear defrost. Check to see if any wrecking yard has any aound your area that you can look at or look in the owners manual for pictures of the dash and switches. You can search here to see if there are any around your area. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

Wow, a Sable without rear defrost??? That's where the rear defrost switch would be. Check to see if you have grid lines on your rear glass and wiring hooked up on the sides of the glass. If it's there, just get a switch and it should work.

Oh and if the car had Autolamps the timer switch would be mounted on the same panel as the dash light dimmer switch.

yeah that would just too good to be true. Can't see grid lines with naked eye, and guess what.. the wires are just clipped off right where they'd be coming out of the pillar trim. You got to be kidding me! But thats factory, the rear window was never replaced. Just amazing that this was an option the customer had to order back then, besides of the power windows and door locks which this car does not have either. And I would have made customers pay extra for such a crackpot idea to not order all of this...
