94 taurus wagon tranmission question?

I have a 94 taurus GL wagon with a 3.8 liter and about 152 k or 90.000 miles on it .I have a problem only when i first start the wagon .The transmission shifts from first to second and then it revs up and wouldn,t shift to high gear for about a half mile then when it does it is good for the rest of the day.I changed the fluid and filter about 15.000 miles ago.Any ideas Thanks

Re: 94 taurus wagon tranmission question?

Delayed engagement is one of the symptoms of a faulty transmission forward clutch piston. The originals where made out of aluminum and cracked easily.

Re: 94 taurus wagon tranmission question?

Depends on how rich you are and how much you like the car. The problem requires a transmission teardown (or replacement) .. it's still cheaper than a new car. If the car is still drivable, I would still use it around town but the problem may get worse if you heat up the transmission by taking long trips.
Personally I like the car. I would get another Taurus or Sable (I see them in the paper for less than $1000) and trade out the transmission and any other parts I could use (I've already done just that with my own 3.8L Sable) ... but that takes a little money, heavy work, space and tools.

Re: 94 taurus wagon tranmission question?

I had some transmission slipping issues in my sable before, and It turned out my engine speed sensor got chewed up and was giving my tranny some very bad speed data....

It would stick in certain gears, drop to first while @ highway speeds, etc...

good luck'
