I have a 95 Taurus, with the 3L V6. When in neutral or park and idling, it
sometimes surges. The engine RPMs will swing quite a bit (don't have a
tach so not sure what the values are).
Any load applied will smooth it out, such as the AC compressor kicking in.
I've sprayed down the throttle body and pulled and sprayed the Air Bypass
solenoid with Throttle body cleaner. This didn't really help.
I tried to move the piston in the Air Bypass Solenoid, but it didn't want to
move. I don't know how hard to try and pry it.
Any suggestions or recommendations as to what could cause this, or how
to fix?
A tune up would probably help if you haven't already done so, including installing new spark plugs. If the wires are OE then they're due for replacement as well. I'd get the vehicle's electrical system load tested to make sure everything is within' spec.
I had a similar problem with a 92 Ranger with the 3.0 V6. When I started the truck, the idle would surge, then drop off, then surge, then drop off, ad nauseum. Turned out that it was a bad Idle Air Control valve. Just something to check out. Good luck.
