95 Mercury Sable Starting Problem

95 Mercury Sable 3.8L 65K original miles.

Never had a problem with the car starting before this. 3 weeks ago I took it in to have the state and I/M done. When the guy got done doing his thing he pulled my car out by the front door and shut it off. After paying, etc I went to leave, but the car would not start. After fiddling around with it for awhile it suddenly decided to start for some unknown reason. I asked the guy what he did and he just said he took the key out and tried it again, but had no explanation as to why it wouldn't start before.

This has happened to me a half dozen times since then, where about 10% of the time the car won't start.

The battery is fine, all the lights, radio, etc come on.
Engine does not crank.

Typical things I do to get it to start are;
Move the shifter around from Park to Drive, Neutral, etc.
Turn the key off and on.
Get out and shove the car back/forward (Car is in park and only moves a few inches, but sometimes starts after doing this as a last resort).

I can replace anything, but my diagnosis skills are lacking. Please tell me what part I should be looking to replace. Starter, ignition switch, ????

Thanks!

Re: Starting Problem

We had a Taurus do that and it was the wire on the starter solenoid. It was a poor connection there.

Re: Starting Problem

Thanks Bert.

The plug connected to the solenoid was loose, so I shoved it back in.

I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.

Well, it's now been about 3 weeks and the car has started every time since reconnecting that plug.
