95 Taurus - Headlights dimming

I'm looking for any help I can get. I've got a 95 Taurus
with about 150,000mi, 3L V6. When driving - usually on
the highway, say above 65 mph - the leadlights will
ramdomly dim. The other night the headlights dimmed, the
dash lights dimmed, and the radio (aftermarket) display
started blinking. If I slow down to about 60 it will clear up.

This has been an ongoing problem for a couple of months
now. But usually while driving around town on the highway.
So it was of no real problem.

This last time (described above) occured while on a 4 hr. trip.
When I got to the destination, I checked the battery voltage -
car stopped, nothing on, the voltage is about 12.8V. With the
headlights on the voltage is about 12.4V

The car has the original alternator. My thoughts are that
the alternator is getting hot and shutting down, but I
don't want to shot gun a new alternator.

Anyone have any ideas, or had a similar problem?

TIA

John

I have a 1990 Taurus GL with 276,000 miles that is currently at the Auto Electric repair garage. The headlights, dash etc. . all flicker at .5 second intervals at all speeds and drives me bonkers when I am driving it. The problem is a loose a ground wire causing a surge. Finding it is the secret. Your problem sounds like its near the motor mounts since it occurs at high speeds. Hope you find its location before your Alternator and VR give out on you!
