96 Sable Tranny issues
Hi Everyone,
Sorry if this topic has been beet to death. I have a 1996 Sable with the Vulcan engine that's been having some transmission issues. The car has about 82,000 miles on it and the engine runs strong however she has some funny shifting patterns- epically at low speeds. Im not sure how long its been doing this as I just started to drive this car and not exactly sure which tranny AX-whichever it is but the car has a column mounted shifter and is a gs sedan. Basically the car will jerk into gear (often times very violently) if for example- I am at a red light stopped and then hit the gas at 30% percent - throttle off- then hit the gas at lets say 50%. This car definitely does not like doing this and will rev high and then shift violently. It seems like the tranny isn't aware of how fast the engine is spinning. Stop and go traffic is a nightmare with this. Another scenario at when it will shift hard is if for example I am making a 90 degree turn that is at a slight grade- I have to throttle off, make the turn, drift up the hill, then throttle gently. Tranny fluid levels are fine and does not smell burnt. Other than a go-stop-go, it shifts fine and smooth. Could it be a speed sensor gone bad? However cruise control works fine. The IAC sensor was just replaced before winter. Someone told me it could be the torque converter but they could be nuts. Any suggestions would be very helpful and greatly appreciated!
