I was wondering, when I got this 96 Taurus LX wagon used, it only came with one key, and no keyless entry transmitters.
This car has an anti-theft system, and the keyless button entry on the drivers side door. Wouldn't you think they would give you the remote transmitters as well?
How could I find out if this car has a remote entry system or not? It could just be a matter of picking up one of those remote keyfob transmitter things if it does have it.
Remote Keyless entry was an option since at least 1993- given you have an LX with a keyless entry keypad you will have remote keyless entry. To program your remotes turn your ignition key from off to run 5 times within 10 seconds ending with key on run position. All doors should lock and unlock to confirm entering the programming mode. Next, press any button on the new remote to program. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the remote is programed. Repeat this step for any other remotes to be programed. Finally, turn the ignition key off to complete programming. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm this. You can get new remotes at you local Ford or L/M dealer. Good luck and let me know how you do on another reply!!!
As much as the 98 and newer one looks nicer and is 20 bucks cheaper it might not work- the rolling code parameters of the remotes may differ between the 2. Try it and see- you may get lucky.
Ok thanks. Im not sure, I may go to the local dealer and see if they will let me buy one and if they have a return policy, just to see if the 98 or newer ones work so I don't order something online and have to hassle with sending it back.
I asked Ford three simple questions just to make sure I have the RKE module:
1.) Where is the keyless entry module located so i can tell if I have one or not
2.) If I do the procedure to program new remotes where you turn on the ignition 5 times in 10 seconds, if the doors lock and unlock, does that mean I have the RKE system or do all Tauruses do that?
3.) Did LX models of that year come standard with the RKE system?
Well, Ford seemed to think that before they could help me, the necessary information I had to give them was:
Vin number:
Color:
Drivers license number:
Social security number:
Where I live:
Work and home phone numbers:
Freinds phone numbers:
How often I take a piss:
What I eat for breakfast:
What time I set my alarm clock for:
So I kindly explained to them I am not looking for specific information about MY vehicle, but just general information about if it was standard for 1996 models. Well, they just said "thank you for taking the time to contact us, blahblahblah" and asked me for the same info again. I figure, screw em. They will probably spam my adress anyway.
So yea, just wondering, if after turning the key on and off 5 times in ten seconds, if all the doors lock and unlock, that means I have the RKE module?
YOU DO HAVE REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY!!! You have a keypad on the door and have the anti-theft system. Only RKE equipped cars will lock and unlock the doors after turning the ignition key. The RKE system is controlled by the Remote Anti-Theft Personallity module which is located under the instrument panel to the right of the steering column. There will be a part number label on the side of it that will also have the 5 digit keypad code on it. Considering you have a Taurus LX it most likely came standard with RKE. Good Luck!!!

Thanks, yea I figured, but that was actually before I asked here on Fordforums, I thought I would post that little bit because I think it is kinda funny how Ford likes to totally track me...
I think going with the 98 or newer ones may just be too much of a hassle if they don't work, I think I will just order the 96 ones. Thanks a bunch and I will let you know how it works.
Did you ever find anything out about your question about getting the lights to flash and the horn to toot?
On my 98 SHO my horn would not chirp and my lights would not blink unless I engaged the alarm.....meaning hit the lock button twice. This is only with a factory RKE too....not aftermarket.

He's reffering to my 2001 Taurus SEL for which I already started a thread about horn chirp and parking light activation on the second press of the lock button- I have not found out yet how to reactivate the parking lights.
