96 Taurus V6 with "U" code, DOHC. I traced the problem to a broken cable that runs from a box on top of the front valve cover to somewhere near the throttle. Bought the part ($170 or so), installed it, and the car passed emissions. On the way home, the check engine light came back on. I've noticed the cable seems a bit loose but other than that appears ok.

Upon cold start, the idle goes to around 1200 and runs smoothly. Put in gear and it idles down nicely and drives well. Any ideas on why the engine light came back on?

Could be other things that are causing the CEL to come on. have you rechecked to see what codes you may have? You can go to Autozone and get them to scan your system. Knowing that will give you a better idea as well as those of us in here what could be the attributing factor of your CEL.
