Re: 96 taurus remote programming
Turn the ignition between off and on (don't start it) 5 times ending in (I think) off. The door locks will pop up and down, then hit a button on the remote, and the door locks will pop up and down again, and it should be good to go.
What is really strange though, is my LX wagon, it is a 1996 but built in mid 1995, did not come from the factory with remote entry, but did have the keypad entry on the door.
I found a Mercury remote for this style system (a type 3 I think) and it programmed in just fine, everything works fine except the panic button, once you hit it, there is absolutely no turning it off short of putting the key in the ignition and turning it to on. Also, the trunk button will unlock the liftgate but not disable the anti-theft system making the alarm go off when you open the trunk, BUT it will shut off if you hit unlock on the remote.
I have a feeling since this was such an early production model of the gen3's, I bet they hadn't completely worked out the remote entry bugs and shipped them without fobs! Oh well, it works good enough for me as long as I don't accidentally hit panic or use the trunk button.
