I am having an intermiitent problem with my Taurus that seems to be the VSS. Vehicle Speed Sensor. What it does is the speedo will be working just fine driving along then all of a sudden it will either stop working or drop down to slower speeds. When this happens the trans will shift and act erratically. If I pull over and shut off the car and then re-start it, it all works fine.

What is the best procedure to remove and replace the sensor? It's a 97 LX Wagon with the 24 valve 6. Thanks for your help on this.

Take it to Autozone to get the codes that might be present and see what they show. They do it for free.
