i have a 97' taurus sho with about 148,000 miles on it. the car runs and drives very well. i have noticed that about a day or so after i have washed the engine off, the car will not shift into drive. if you leave it in drive from a stop, it will take off in second gear. you can manually take off in first, shift to second, but then no drive. after about a day or so of this, it acts as if nothing ever happened. could this be the the electronic range selector going bad?

Sounds like what happen to me when the ABS module went bad. I would take the ABS connector off and spray it down with some WD 40.
