This is a common problem with this year Taurus. It's my wife's car, When you drive somewhere and get where you need to be, alot of the time when you put the car in park, the RPMs will just start to climb...and I mean upwards of 3grand, if not more. I've taken it to several mechanics and none seem to be able to figure it out. Most things I've found online say vacuum leak. Yet, nothing can be figured out. It's really not cool and freaks my wife out. Anybody got any helpful suggestions besides a rag and a lighter in the gas tank??

Idle air control valves are a known problem on these vehicles. You can try cleaning the old one with carb cleaner. Also clean all the orifices from the IAC valve into the throttle body. Clean the throttle plate too. Just make sure you don't get carb cleaner into the electrical portions of the IAC.

Nope, no overheating problems or coolant loss. Now, when cleaning the IAC, can the throttle plate also be cleaned with Carb Cleaner? I know it's all kinda touchy being electronics. It's been a while since I've had to do it. Just looking for a refresher course LOL
So if I understand you correctly, take the IAC off and clean that with carb cleaner... and use throttle body cleaner for the throttle plate? Should I just spray down the IAC or use a rag soaked with carb cleaner?
I know, stupid questions.... it's just been a while since doing it and I REALLY don't wanna jack her car up and have her driving my truck LMAO
Just got done with it.... I did not get the car up to normal operating temp b/c it's kinda chilly here this morning and I didn't feel like burning through the fuel of driving it around to do so. But it appears to have worked. She'll let me know tomorrow when she goes to work and I'll get back to you.

Just wanted to give an update... So far, so good. No more issues with the rpms skyrocketing when my wife puts the car in park. Hopefully it will stay that way. I don't know why I never thought to clean the IAC.... Thanks to Bert and Sterling_Six!!
