Hi, my '98 Taurus with a little over 100k has deleloped a soft, spongy front end. Other than that it runs and handles fine. Is it time to replace the struts? Is this something a shade tree mechanic should attempt for the first time? If not is it very expensive to have done at a service station?

Sounds like it's time for struts. You will need a spring compressor besides the tools required to remove the struts. An alignment check is a good idea after the repairs.

You can buy struts with springs already installed, that way you don't have to mess with spring compressors. Potentially dangerous if not done right, as the spring has lots of energy in it.

And if you have the spring, mount and strut all as one piece it is fairly easy to take out and put in with a bit of disasssemblage. I've have a bit of practice but can swap them out in an hour apiece working at a leisurely pace with a few beverages to help out.
