98SE and the security system

With the 98SE my daughter just bought she only got one key. I was told at the local hardware store that the ke had a "chip" in it, and we would need to go to the dealer for a duplicate key. Contacting one of the local dealers, we were told that two keys would be needed, and the cost would be $70! Is there a way to disable the security system so we could get the key duplicated inexpensively? If not, is there a more economical alternative to the dealers $70 quote? Thanks,

Kevin

Re: 98SE and the security system

Sorry, you will have to do it at the dealer to do it properly. You need a minimum of 2 keys, so you only need to buy 1 key.

Or.......................*Warning* Redneck Fix *WARNING*

Go to the local hardware store and get as many keys as you need. Make sure they turn in the ignition.. Take the fat key with the chip in it and try to remove the "pill" or chip inside the key by removing the small cover on top of the key (if there is one) or actually split open the key to get the chip. This may destroy the key, but the chip should be fine.

Now take that chip and tape it real close to the ignition, or remove the 2-piece cover around the column and glue it in there so it don't look like a Redneck fix.

To test my theory, go get a key from hardware. Take your old key and hold it next to the ignition while you start the car with the new key.
