Re: 99 tarus coolant missing

The clear topped aftermarket tanks are better than the black topped OEM ones. I believe Ford went to the clear tanks in 2000.

Good idea to replace the water pump, wish I had thought of it. I guess I'll replace in the summer when I can do it outside in warm weather with a few cold ones!!!
I'll post tomorrow after I drive around awhile to make sure that was it....

Thanks to everyone!!!
It was the reservoir, after replacing it and driving around, no coolant loss.

Re: 99 tarus coolant missing

Still loosing coolant with service engine light on.
Our taurus was loosing about 1/3 gal of coolant every couple of days. I replaced the coolant reservoir (there were cracks in the bottom). Never overheated.
All was ok I thought. "Lost" about 12 ounces of coolant in the last week. On start up the car had a rough idle and then driving it was fine. This went on for a couple of days.
Now the service engine light came on and
the rough idle is gone.
Oil checks ok.

I brought it in to the shop and the mechanic said the error code was cylinder 1 misfiring. He removed the plug could not see a leak. Also pressurized the system with no leaks.

He believes it's the head gasket, says may have coolant in it when starting and than burns it off causing rough start.

Any other opinions would be aprreciated. Were going to repair it if were 100% sure this is the problem.

Also would rebuilding/machine the head be a smart move while replacing the head gasket.

Re: 99 tarus coolant missing

You should keep the tank as full as possible per a Ford TSB.
