99 Taurus front end noise, transaxle???

I had a noise start in my drive train coming from what I believed was a front wheel bearing. Earlier, I jacked the car's front end and ran the engine up to about 1500 RPM in gear with only one wheel at a time turning. The right hand (passengers) side seemed to be noiser than the right. And being hearing challenged, locating just where it comes from while drivng is impossible for me.

I really thought it was the wheel bearing so I changed it yesterday. YUP, it was a learning experience. To make matters worse, it did not fix the problem. The noise is getting louder, more like a wow-wow-wow type. I dread pulling the thing down again but the noise is starting to bother me.

OH, when I purchased this thing, I bought it on the cheap. Was an old special service police car but it had very low mileage of 79K last year. The dealer told me he replaced the half shaft on the side where the noise is coming from. I am thinking of just ripping it out and replacing it.

Comments???

Thanks--

Foggy

Raise the whole front on stands and have someone run it to where the noise is prevalent. Then get under it and listen with a piece of hose, Or use a long screwdriver to touch various locations and listen with your ear against the handle.

" being hearing challenged " is going to make it hard for you to locate noise . Usually raising car and running it on the stands would let you know where the fault is but sometimes it gives you a false trail as there is no load on parts and susp etc. is not hanging in natural position . Sometimes if you take someone out with you on road test to listen , throws up a different opinion where it's coming from .Not the first time I thought a noise was coming from one side to be proven it was the opposite end .May well be driveshaft . Long shot , but assume oil level in transmission o.k ?

Yes, transmission oil is where it should be. I will try to have somebody with me next week and see if he can get a better idea of the direction from which the noise is coming from.

Back to half shafts, how does one determine they are a problem?

Thanks--

This refers to diveshafts in general , but usually just hold a joint and twist shaft , same as old prop shafts .
