I've put 2 power steering pumps in my neighbors taurus in as many months. I have flushed the system each time with 2 or more gallons of ATF and still it only lasts a few days before it starts to whine and eventually fail. The next one I install I'll put an inline filter into the return hose but I'm not convinced this will solve my problem. Any suggestions?
Talk about ironies, My mothers 99 Taurus power steering started acting up. I open it up to check the fluid, none was in it. Didn't even see any fluid leaking anywhere as well. I added half a quart of fluid no problems. Next day it started up again. Just as the day before no fluid was leaking anywhere. We take it to Ford to see what's wrong with it. It was the steering rack. All the fluid was gathering in the plastic boot.

A bad steering rack will also ruin the pump, it will get all the crap from the rack in it.
