I have a '96 taurus gl vulcan with about 112,000 miles. A couple of months ago my ac quit working all of a sudden. It worked fine one day but not the next. When I turn the control to ac nothing happens, no drag on rpms, no clutch engagement. Since summer was coming to an end I did not spend any money for a fix. But now that it's a little chilly in the morning I tried the heater and no heat either. I also tried the defroster and again no drag on rpms, and still no heat. The fan works but just blows the same air as the vent. I checked some fuses under the dash but they're ok.
Does anyone know if there is a single problem source that would affect both the ac and the heater?

It's possible that it's the blend door motor. With the engine off and the key on, turn the knob from cold to warm and listen. Then go from warm to cold and see if you hear the motor run. It's pretty quiet so listen close.

Thanks, Bert. I just tried that and I can hear the blend door when I turn the dial from heat to cool and again from cool to heat. real quiet like you said.

That's the only part that can affect both. Feel the heater hoses and see if they're both hot with the enging hot. The A/C would be a separate problem/

On the A/C part of it, check for fuses and relays under the hood. Heat side of it, check as Bert suggested.
